Abstract

More than a century ago, Charles Fourier expressed the idea, subsequently developed further by Marx and Engels (1), that the status of women is one of the indices of the progress of society. Women are half of humanity. Their participation in the life of society, the social roles they play, and the attitude taken toward them characterize the level of development of a given society and what distinguishes it from others.
