Abstract

SUMMARY The effect of the weedicides Tordon 22K, Tordon 50D and 2,4,5-T, applied at different times of the year, on the growth of Pinus radiata D.Don seedlings was examined. In general, Tordon 22K did not affect growth or kill the seedlings but it had morphological effects which could lead to growth malformation. Tordon 50D and 2,4,5-T greatly reduced growth and killed the shoot tips of seedlings at most times of the year but had least effect when the seedlings were not growing. Tordon 22K seems the safest weedicide of those tested to use in newly-established P. radiata plantations but Tordon 50D and 2,4,5-T could be used safely when the pines are not growing.
