Abstract

The effect of viscosity on the axisymmetric stability of a radially accelerated cylindrical shell of plasma in the presence of a soleniodal magnetic field has been investigated. It is found that when the Reynolds number as well as the dimensionless wave number is small, the system is unstable and the growth rate of instability depends upon its acceleration. This is in agreement with the experimental observations of Dickinson.
