Abstract

The effect of virus infection on resistance toPhytophthora infestans was studied in the field and under greenhouse conditions. Katahdin plants grown from tubers naturally infected with potato virus X (PVX), potato leaf roll virus (PLRV) and potato spindle tuber viroid (PSTV) and plants grown from tubers of the clone New York 47 infected with potato virus Y (PVY) were used in these experiments. Plants infected with PVX, PVY, PLRV, and PSTV were classified as more resistant toP. infestans than healthy plants, when size of lesion, time of sporulation, amount of sporulation, number of lesions, and percentage of defoliation were used as criteria for determining resistance.
