Abstract

Rationale: Abnormal activity in motor areas of the brain impair motor function in people with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Normalisation of PD brain activity can improve motor performance. Recent research highlights improved motor function following transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the motor cortex, but a lack of neurophysiological evidence limits the progress of tDCS as a prospective therapy. Here we investigated the efficacy of tDCS in modulating the haemodynamic response function (HRF) of the motor cortex in PD patients using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).
