Abstract

In this paper the effect of lightning return stroke channel (RSC) speed, on induced voltages on a single overhead line is investigated. Simulations are performed using NEC-4 software. Three varieties of Antenna Theory (AT) model have been used: 1) simple AT model, in which the wave propagation speed along the RSC is the speed of light, 2) Fixed Inductance and Resistance (FLR) model where RSC speed is set to C/2, and 3) FLR model where RSC speed is set to C/3, using appropriate distributed inductances. The voltages induced on a transmission line by a lightning return strokes nearby the line, are compared together considering the above mentioned models, moreover the profile speed for different RSC wave propagations speeds are presented.
