Abstract

It is shown that the inelastic process in which two nucleons scatter into a nucleon and a Δ (1236 MeV) can, in second order, contribute about 34 MeV/ A attraction to the binding energy of nuclear matter. In the bound tri-nucleon system this implies that the probability of this process is comparable to the usual d-state probability. The effect of this is examined in the β-decay of the triton and the magnetic moments of 3H and 3He. A contribution to three-body forces is also discussed.
