Abstract

The effect of temperature on oogenesis and embryonic development for 14 species of Tabanidae was studied by collecting engorged females from a bait animal and holding them at temperatures ranging from 15.5–35 °C. The temperature range most favorable for oogenesis was 23.9–32.2 °C. There was no oviposition at 15.5 °C, 9 species oviposited at 18.3 °C, and 11 species oviposited at 35 °C. The length of time between blood meal and oviposition decreased as temperature increased. The temperature range most favorable for embryonic development was 21.1–29.4 °C. Regression equations of the effect of temperature on days to oviposition and days to hatch are presented.
