Abstract

Adsorption of acetic and stearic acids, and of methyl acetate and stearate by the carbons Graphon and Spheron 6 has been studied. The surface of Spheron 6 is polar and has a significant amount of chemisorbed oxygen reported to be in the form of hydroxide, aldehyde, carbonyl, quinonoid, and lactone-type structures, whereas the Graphon surface is virtually free of these. The results highlight the greater interaction of the shorter chain more polar molecules with the polar Spheron 6 surface, and also show that longer chain molecules are more easily adsorbed on the not-so-polar Graphon surface.
