Abstract

Using a simple, accelerated, service simulation test the effect of steelmaking, vacuum melting and casting techniques on the life of rolling bearings have been assessed. There is a variation between casts and between the products of different steelmakers but the trend in results is similar. Acid and neutral open hearth material appears generally to be superior to basic electric arc material. Modifications in the steelmaking process which reduce factors found to be detrimental improve rolling contact fatigue life. Vacuum techniques are beneficial.
