Abstract

(Anaesthesia. 2018;73:832–838) Combined spinal-epidural (CSE) analgesia is a rapid and effective analgesic technique during labor, with minimal motor impairment and high maternal satisfaction. Despite these advantages, high incidences of fetal heart rate (FHR) abnormalities and uterine hyperactivity have been reported with its use. This study assessed the difference between spinal bupivacaine-fentanyl or bupivacaine on baseline uterine tone and FHR abnormalities; the hypothesis was that the use of fentanyl would be associated with higher uterine tone.
