Abstract

The rat loses its capacity for normal work within a few hours following either adrenalectomy or hypophysectomy. The work output of adrenalectomized rats can be sustained at a normal level by the continuous intravenous injection of adrenal cortical extract (ACE) whereas the performance of hypophysectomized and adrenalectomized-hypophysectomized rats is improved but is not restored to normal by adrenal cortical hormones. The performance of adrenalectomized-hypophysectomized rats is restored to normal by the continuous injection of ACE plus certain commercial preparations of corticotrophin (Ingle, Nezamis & Morley, 1953). Corticotrophin does not improve the performance of adrenalectomized-hypophysectomized rats in the absence of adrenal cortical hormones and it does not improve the performance of adrenalectomized rats which have the pituitary gland intact.
