Abstract

Summary. The effect was measured of four known erythropoietic agents (erythropoietin, haemolysate, cobalt chloride and testosterone propionate) on the 24‐hr iron utilization of hypertransfused male rats and on the oxygen tension in a subcutaneous air pocket. Only testosterone propionate failed to increase the 24‐hr iron utilization of hypertransfused rats. On the other hand, only cobalt chloride altered the oxygen tension in the gas pockets. A striking increase in PO2 was observed with cobalt chloride suggesting a block in oxygen utilization with intracellular hypoxia. Using more intense treatment of female hypertransfused rats with various androgen preparations, namely, testosterone propionate, norethandrolone and nandrolone decanoate, only the latter had significant erythropoietic effect. However, this was apparently not mediated by tissue hypoxia, since the oxygen tension in subcutaneous air pockets did not change.
