Abstract

From a study of the effect of concentration on the temperature dependence of fluidity in solutions of nitrates and chlorates it has been established that KNO 3, NH 4NO 3 and KClO 3 have the same effect on water as the alkali metal and ammonium halides, both anions acting as simple structure breakers. LiNO 3, NaNO 3 and NaClO 3 also destroy bulk order in water and replace it by a different order that depends on the hydration of the cation. In Cu(NO 3) 2, Cu 2+ enhances intrinsic water structure in concentrations up to about 0·05 m, but at higher concentrations bulk water structure is destroyed and order depends on the hydration structure of the cation.
