Abstract

SUMMARY Water soluble extracts of bovine placental cotyledons stimulated the growth of Aspergillus fumigatus and Absidia ramosa strains in vitron . The effect was exerted on all strains tested, irrespective of origin. Growth stimulating activity was also present, but in lower concentration, in extracts of other bovine tissues and in serum. The extracts were stable to heat, lipase and proteolytic enzymes but labile to periodate oxidation. The activating material was also dialyzable and associated with the low molecular weight carbohydrate-containing fraction, but was distinct from meso -erythritol. These observations support the hypothesis that the placental localization of the fungi producing mycotic abortion is promoted by the presence of growth stimulants in this tissue.
