Abstract

This note describes the results of a preliminary investigation of the decomposition of azides by soft x-rays. It has been found that in the series KN3, TlN3, and AgN3, decomposition occurs to a much greater extent in the case of AgN3 where there is a departure from a purely ionic structure. For AgN3 the increase in the lattice parameter during decomposition takes place in the direction of the weak silver-nitrogen bonds. Since azides decompose in the x-ray beam, it is necessary to take this phenomenon into account in any structural determination.
