Abstract

The in vitro effect of sodium chloride on the enzyme activity of four halophytes, Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima (L.) Thell., Halimione portulacoides (L.) Aell., Salicornia ramosissima Woods and Suaeda maritima (L.) Dum. was investigated. The activity was, in general, affected by sodium chloride in a similar manner to that reported for salt sensitive species. The most notable exceptions were the sodium chloride stimulated ATPases of Beta and Salicornia.
