Abstract
Background: Previous studies have suggested that weight loss can reduce the risk of infertility. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between weight loss after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and changes in sex hormones and fertility in obese patients undergoing LSG in Shiraz. Methods: This study was performed on 68 obese females aged 18–50 years in Shiraz for LSG from 2017 to 2020. The patients were asked to go to the laboratory within the first 3 days of their menstrual cycles for performing hormonal tests. The requested preoperative tests were repeated for the patients 6 months after LSG. Results: The mean age of the patients was 34.56 ± 7.94 years. Among the 68 individuals under investigation, 30.8% had polycystic ovarian disease and 39.7% had irregular menstrual cycles before surgery that decreased after the surgery. However, a significant descending trend was observed in estradiol and total testosterone levels. Conclusion: In this study, despite the positive effects of LSG on sex hormones and the laboratory factors that could improve fertility, no improvement was observed in infertility after 6 months. The results also revealed the surgery improved significantly the regularity of the menstrual cycle.
