Abstract

This study was carried out to reveal the effect of sleep hygiene training applied to individuals taking hemodialysis treatment on patients' sleep quality and quality of life. The study was completed with 34 intervention group patients and 33 controls, being totally 67 patients. Intervention group was given sleep hygiene training once week for 3 weeks and individual interviews were conducted. Face-to-face interviews were used to collect the data through the initial follow-up before the training, the intermediate follow-up 1 month after the training, and the final follow-up 3 months after the training using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Kidney Disease Quality of Life Instrument (KDQOL™-36). The PSQI of intervention group decreased significantly compared to the control group after the intermediate follow-up and the final follow-up (p < 0.05). In addition, all sub-dimensions and total mean scores of KDQOLTM-36 indicated a significant increase in the intervention group in comparison to the control group at the final follow-up (p < 0.05). The findings of our study showed that sleep hygiene training increases sleep quality and the quality of life in hemodialysis patients. In addition, the effective sleep hygiene training programs can improve sleep quality in hemodialysis patients with sleep problems.
