Abstract

Nanoparticles are generally blended with base lubricant oils to enhance the tribological properties mainly to minimize the wear and friction in the applications. Silicon dioxide, Titanium dioxide and Aluminium oxide nanoparticles are mixed and infused in SN 500 base oil in this research. Samples are prepared in varying weight percentages of SiO2-Al2O3-TiO2 nanoparticles in base oil. Pin-on-disc testing is carried out to determine the wear and friction at a certain load, time and speed. The results exhibit that the inclusion of SiO2-Al2O3-TiO2 nanoparticles enhances the reduction in wear and friction considerably. The best optimum mix of nanoparticles is analysed using Taguchi design and determined by performing grey relational analysis. Infusion of nanoparticles in base oils shows that the efficiency of the oil has increased compared to virgin base oil.
