Abstract

A sintering study on zirconia with SiO 2 and Al 2O 3 additives was made. Experimental data show that the bulk density was decreased, while the content of monoclinic zirconia phase was increased with increasing SiO 2, Al 2O 3 additives. Evidence is presented which indicates that a second phase, forsterite in the ZrO 2/1bMgO/1bSiO 2 system and spinel in the ZrO 2/1bMgO/1bAl 2O 3 system, was formed. The variations in density of sintered materials are attributable to the formation of forsterite or spinel phase which is in turn resulted from the SiO 2 Al 2 O 3 additives.
