Abstract
The detrimental effect of acutely delivered ionizing radiation on the erythropoietic system of man and animals has been well established by numerous histopathological investigations and extensively reviewed (1-7). Quantitative studies (8-12) of the effect of acute ionizing radiation on the erythropoietic system, utilizing Fe59, have been shown to reflect radiation-induced functional changes. The present work has been concerned with a study of the effect of both single and multiple doses of Co60 y-rays and fission neutrons on the distribution of Fe59 in rat plasma, bone marrow, red blood cells, liver, and spleen. From the data we have derived a comparison of the relative biological effectiveness of acute y-radiation and neutron radiation, and, in conjunction with morphologic studies, have evaluated the functional capacity of the rat erythropoietic system.
