Abstract

Phenol-formaldehyde resin-quartzite aggregate composites have been investigated for the effect of silane coupling agent (γ-aminopropyltriethoxy silane) and a microfiller, CaCO 3, on their compressive strength. The integral blend additive method of application of the coupling agent was used in the preparation of samples. Both silane and microfiller additives have been seen to facilitate bonding between resin and the aggregates and consequently result in improved strength. Infrared studies have indicated that silane bonds chemically with siliceous aggregates.
