Abstract

Mean values for body weight, muscle weight, total fibre number, mean fibre diameters and the percentage of fibres exhibiting Ringbinden were determined for male and female mature and senile mice. The results in all cases for senile mice showed a decrease in muscle weight relative to body weight. There was a general tendency towards a reduced fibre number and an increase in mean fibre diameter in senile muscles. The correlations of muscle atrophy, in terms of muscle weight relative to body weight, with fibre number and mean fibre diameter were discussed. There was a strong positive relationship between the incidence of Ringbinden in senile muscles and the normal mature level of hypertrophy in individual muscles.
