Abstract
The influence of sand particle size on the strength of cement-based mortars is considered on the assumption that the mortar is a sand-cement composite material. It is shown that, for the particular class of sand gradings investigated, the absolute size of the particles has no effect on the tensile strength of the mortar and that failure initiates from observable cracks within the cement matrix.
