Abstract

Objective To study the effect of safflower polysaccharide (SPS) on expression of matrix metalloproteinases 9 (MMP-9) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase (TIMP-1) in tumor-bearing mice. Methods S180 sarcoma-bearing BABL/c mice were given SPS through intraperitoneal injection for 10 days 24 hours after SPS treatment, tumor issue was removed.Real Time-PCR was used to analyze the expression of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in tumor tissue. Results The expression of MMP-9 in the mice treated with low-, mid-, and high-dose SPS was 0.452, 0, 204, 0.026 times respectively than that of control mice. The expression of TIMP-1 in these threes groups was 3.4, 5.2, 10.0 times higher than that of control mice. Conclusion SPS can inhibit the expression of MMP-9 and promote the expression of TIMP-1 mRNA in tumor tissues.SPS might inhibit the tumor growth and metastasis. Key words: Safflower polysaccharide; Matrix metalloproteinases-9; Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase-1
