Abstract
The effect of rural and urban ties kinship and marriage on household structure in the village of Mbanza Manteke in Western Zaire is analyzed using village census data for 1965. The analysis of households provides rural data that reveal the interdependence of village and town and a form of family organization adapted to mobility within the total urban-rural social field. It is found that over time several distinct factors produce the variation in household structure. These factors are age sex marriage and divorce labour migration and return the rights and obligations of kinship and the relative economic independence of women in the village.
