Abstract
The purpose of the study was to ascertain whether nonstutterers, like stutterers, become more fluent when pacing their speech with a metronome. Each of 20 adult male nonstutterers read four different passages. Two of the passages were read at their normal rate and two were read with a metronome at one word per beat. Based upon the number of disfluencies observed in each condition, it appears not only that nonstutterers become more fluent when pacing their speech with a metronome, but also that the degree to which they become more fluent is within the range which has been reported for stutterers. This finding provides additional support for the argument recently advanced by several investigators that the effect of the metronome on stuttering is not primarily a result of distraction, at least in the way distraction has been traditionally defined.
