Abstract

Sexual arousal in homosexual and heterosexual males was examined under control and relaxation conditions. Subjects were shown slides of males, females, and sexually neutral materials while penile circumference was monitored. Verbal ratings of physical sexual arousal and pleasantness were also recorded. Results showed there was no significant difference for penile responses to the nonpreferred sex and neutral slides. However, both homosexual and heterosexual subjects responded significantly more to their preferred sex under the relaxation condition than the control condition. Verbal ratings of sexual arousal and pleasantness did not discriminate between relaxation and control conditions but homosexual subjects' ratings of sexual arousal were significantly larger for slides of males than females and, in turn, larger for slides of females than neutral slides. All their pleasantness ratings were positive. Heterosexual subjects found only slides of females sexually arousing and rated slides of males as unpleasant.
