Abstract

Sentul chicken is a specific chicken from Ciamis region, West Java, Indonesia, and it is a dual purpose type which can be purposed for eggs and meat production. One of the alternative to improve performance is by giving the ration added with a mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) peel meal. Mangosteen peel meal is one of the medicinal plants used as a herbal medicine containing xanthone compounds as antioxidants, and antimicrobials. This research aims to determine the effect of addition mangosteen peel meal (Garcinia mangostana) in ration on final body weight, carcass composition and the cholesterol content of Sentul chicken. This experiment used 100 days old chicks of Sentul chicken that was raised in cages until 10 weeks old. Using completely randomized design, with four levels of mangosteen peel meal (ration without mangosteen peel meal (P0), and ration that added 2.5% (P1), 5% (P2), and 7.5% (P3), of mangosteen peel meal, and five replications, each replication consisted of five Sentul chickens. The parameters were final body weight, carcass percentage, giblet weight and the cholesterol content of Sentul chicken. Data were analyzed statistically with Completely Randomized Design and each data with significant differences between treatments was tested using Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results that using mangosteen peel meal 7.5% gave no significant effect on percentage of liver and gizzard weight, but the use of ration with the addition of mangosteen peel meal at 5% and 7.5% gave a significant effect on final body weight, carcass percentage and blood cholesterol. This research indicated that the addition of mangosteen peel meal in the ration up to 7.5% gave the best on final body weight, carcass composition and the cholesterol content of Sentul chicken.
