Abstract

The problem of motivating a fourth-year German class seemed almost insurmountable. The students' initial exposure to German was very chaotic. During their first year, they were taught by seven different teachers, most of whom had no background in the language. Although a variety of motivating activities such as skits, discussion groups, and reading short stories were attempted, little positively affected them. The availability of German radio broadcasts was considered as a means to motivate students and to ascertain what effect radio might have on their attitudes of wanting to learn and continue German.
