Abstract

A study has been carried out on the effect of the level of crude protein (12, 15 and 18% dry matter) in diets and substitution of soybean cake for legume seeds (lupins, lentils, faba beans) in feeds on the growth and slaughter parameters of male lambs of the Rasa Aragonesa breed. The lambs which were given the low protein level (L 1) consumed less feed (g/kg BW 0.75, P<0.05), gained less weight (g/d, P<0.01), and had a lower feed conversion ( P<0.01) than the lambs in the medium (L 2) and high (L 3) levels of CP. Omental and mesenteric fat deposits decreased as the level of CP in the diet was increased ( P<0.05). The lambs fed a diet which included faba beans consumed significantly more feed than the rest of the animals and gained more weight than those which were fed on lupins and lentils ( P<0.01).
