Abstract

Low concentrations of prostaglandins E 1 and E 2 (10 −11 g/ml) inhibited contractions of the mouse vas deferens in response to transmural stimulation. Excitatory junction potentials were reduced by low concentrations of prostaglandins E 1 and E 2 without change in the resting membrane potential. Higher concentrations of prostaglandin E 1 and E 2 (10 −5 g/ml) abolished contractions and decreased the resting membrane potential. Prostaglandin F 2α had similar effects but caused depolarisation at 10 −11 g/ml. The inhibitory effects of prostaglandin E 1 and E 2 on nerve induced contractions were antagonized by elevated external calcium concentrations and potentiated by low calcium containing solutions. These results support the view that prostaglandins reduce transmitter output at sympathetic nerve terminals.
