Abstract

Abstract J.H. THOMPSON and M. ANGULO, The effect of prostaglandins on gastrointestinal serotonin in tht rat , European J. Pharmacol. 4 (1968) 224–227. Total serotonin levels were measured spectrophotofluorometrically in the stomach fundus (SF), pyloric antrum (PA) and mid-jejunum (MJ) of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (200–380 g) following injection of prostaglandins (PG) e 1 and E 2 . PGE 1 100 μg/kg IV did not significantly effect MJ serotonin levels at various time periods from 0.5–60.0 minutes. Furthermore, PGE 1 in doses of 10–900 μg/kg SC did not significantly effect total MJ serotonin levels 30 minutes after injection. PGE 1 and PGE 2 in doses of 200 μg/kg SC were without effect on serotonin levels in SF, PA and MJ. Similar results were obtained following a 60 minute subcutaneous infusion of PGE 1 1 μg/kt/min. It is concluded that the gastric secretory depression and smooth muscle stimulation produced by PG are not mediated via the release of serotonin.
