Abstract

The effects of prostaglandin E1(PGE1) on the electrical and ionic (Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Cl′) transport characteristics of isolated Rana temporaria skin were determined. PGE1 caused a) an increase in short-circuit current and decreases in transepithelial potential difference and calculated d. c. resistance, usually commencing within 1 min; b) a large increase in Na+ influx and an increase in Na+ efflux (smaller absolutely, but larger relatively than that in influx) such that the increment in net inward Na+ movement was approximately equal to that inI sc in the early periods; and c) increases in the influx and efflux values, and the corre-sponding transepithelial permeability coefficients, for Cl′, K+ and Ca2+. For these latter ions, there were no significant differences between influx and efflux values either before or after PGE1 so that they did not appear to contribute towards short-circuit current.
