Abstract

Statement of the Problem: Significant blood loss and requirement for blood transfusion have regularly been cited as a risk of orthognathic surgery. Historically, patients provided preoperative autologous blood donation to prevent the risk of disease transmission. Many different surgical and anesthetic techniques have evolved to minimize the risks associated with, and the need for blood transfusions in orthognathic surgery patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a single preoperative dose of recombinant erythropoietin alpha (EPO) by comparing postoperative hematocrit and the rate of blood transfusion in healthy orthognathic surgical patients.
