Abstract

The nonlinearity of hydroxy-azo dye doped liquid crystals is investigated and the effect of tautomerism is considered. The results indicate that, the nonlinearity of guest–host system can be affected by control of phototautomerism and incident light modulation. In special conditions, the variation of nonlinearity can be stable, so it can generate a stable refractive index pattern because of the optical reorientation of liquid crystal molecules.
