Abstract

This study aims to evaluate midwifery practice in relation to the long-term health of women. The objectives are two-fold. It asks if there is an association between not suturing some perineal tears and the incidence of urinary incontinence and dyspareunia after childbirth. It also seeks to establish whether women are given midwifery advice regarding pelvic floor exercises. The study rationale is that midwives may be unaware of the extent of problems because of the short duration of maternity care. The results of this study fail to show an increase in the incidence of urinary incontinence or dyspareunia by leaving some perineal tears unsutured. The results suggest that the condition of urinary incontinence can be prevented or improved by performing pelvic floor exercises. Incontinence is under-reported and awareness of the extent of the problem is essential.
