Abstract

Sintering studies on α-alumina powder have been conducted to determine the influence of particle size (0.08–0.1, 0.2–0.3 and 0.8–1.0 μm) and sintering atmosphere upon the rate of sintering in the temperature range 1200–1600° C. The shrinkage initiation temperature does not depend upon the particle size of powder and sintering atmosphere. It has been found that the apparent diffusion coefficient increases with decrease in the particle size. The results obtained indicate that bulk diffusion is the principal mechanism of material transport. The temperature dependence of the rate of sintering is characterized by an activation energy of 133 ± 5 kcal/mole.
