Abstract
The effect of orbital relaxation in average-atom calculations of the atomic physics of plasmas is investigated using self-consistent-field models for several elements. It is shown that for medium and high- Z materials the effect of orbital relaxation, whilst being very significant for low states of ionization, is less significant for higher states and that the effect of orbital relaxation varies substantially along an isoelectronic sequence.
