The mechanism of hyperglycemia has not been satisfactorily explained.Twenty-three well controlled diabetic patients were studied during a control period and for a prolonged period while on Chlorthalidone. The following data were collected: weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, serum potassium, uric acid, and urea nitrogen, 24-hr urinary 17-ketosteroids, 17-hydroxycorticosteroids, and aldosterone. During treatment approximately one half of the patients showed a significant rise in blood sugar and adrenal steroid excretion above control levels.
