•Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of preventable death in the US. •Hypertriglyceridemia affects over 25% of the US population. •Different formulations of prescription omega-3 fatty acids have various effects on lipids. •Over-the-counter omega-3 dietary supplements do not produce the same results as prescription products.
