Abstract

When nitrogen fixation in peas was partially replaced by nitrate assimilation as the source of nitrogen, an increase was found in the amount of soluble nitrogen that could be extracted from the fruits of the plants, and within this soluble fraction, increases were found in the levels of some of the acidic amino acids. Levels of protein amino acids in the peas were generally unaffected by the type of nitrogen source except for the level of aspartic acid which was about 20 per cent lower in peas supplied with nitrate. No differences were found in the proportions of the essential amino acids.
