Abstract

Investigations were carried out to study in man the effect of single intravenous administrations of nicotinic acid and of a prolonged treatment for 35 days. To this end, total lipemia and various lipid fractions were checked in 15 subjects after the administration of 100 mg, 500 mg and i g of nicotinic acid, respectively. The subjects were examined hourly for 8 consecutive hours and again 24 hours after the injection. Also, the behaviour of the various serum lipid fractions was checked every week during treatment with nicotinic acid in 9 subjects. It was found that neither single administrations, even of large doses, nor prolonged intravenous treatment with nicotinic acid induce significant variations in the lipid levels and composition.
