Abstract

Most organic coatings are pigmented with Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) to increase their covering power. TiO2 can be photoactivated under UV irradiation causing the formation of free radicals leading to accelerated degradation of the polymeric coating and release of Carbon Dioxide (CO2). In commercial paint systems expensive Ultra Violet Absorbers (UVA's) and Hindered Amine Light Stabilisers (HALS) are used to control degradation. The application of thin film oxygen barriers to the surface of an organic coating could be a possible alternative. Various metal and metal oxide films have been applied to a model paint system and the effects upon stability studied using a novel closed-loop flat panel irradiation reactor measuring the CO2 evolution kinetics by FTIR spectroscopy.
