Abstract
13 pairs of patients with tropical ulcers harbouring Vincent's organisms were treated for 1 week with metronidazole and placebo respectively, in a double blind trial. The drug had a significant effect on the healing progress. Though after 9 weeks of observation most of the metronidazole-treated ulcers had healed, most of those treated with placebo were only reduced to about half their original size. Only 11 patients (3 placebo, 8 metronidazole) could be followed up to complete epithelialization.
