Abstract
Samples of poultry wastewater were analysed to examine the effect of some metallic toxicants on their BOD values. Results showed that 1 mg Cu (II) or Zn ions per litre of the wastewater caused as much as 33% and 16·9% BOD suppression, respectively. This was due to the toxic effect of the metals on the bacteria responsible for the biochemical oxidation of the organic wastes in the wastewater. The metals did not show any appreciable effect on the COD measurements of the wastewater.
