Abstract

Changes in intravascular hydrogen ion concentration are believed to have little direct effect upon cerebral blood flow (CBF) (2). While acute metabolic alkalosis produced by sodium bicarbonate infusion has been shown to produce transient increase in CBF in animals (1) and man (8), this has been ascribed to transient-associated increase in PaCO2 acting via the CO2 shuttle to lower periarteriolar extracellular fluid pH (1).
