Abstract

The fact that ionizing radiation can cause an increase in the latent period of T1 bacteriophage has been shown by Adams, Robbins, and one of the authors (1). This is clearly concerned with some internal units, because this bacteriophage appears to have an inert protein coat (2) similar to that found for T2 phage by Hershey and Chase (3). The use of electrons of low voltage in penetration studies of biological membranes has been successfully tried by Hutchinson and one of the authors (4) for B. subtilis and for T1 phage by Davis (4). Therefore, penetration studies to see at what depth the latent period-determining property is located are of interest.
