SummarySummaryThe obstetric performance and pregnancy outcome of 112 underweight patients were compared with matched controls of normal weight. The underweight women had signiticantly higher rates of anaemia hut were less prone to develop pregnancy-induced hypertension. Prematurity was significantly more frequent in the bahies of underweight mothers. There was no difference in the frequency of antepartum haemorrhage or reduced fetal movements. The mean birth weight of infanta of underweight women was 376 g less than that of infants of controls. Underweight women, who were also anaemic, had a higher incidence of low birth weight infants (less than 2500 g) despite adequate weight gain during pregnancy.
